No, you haven't missed any newsletters. We just haven't put one out since February/March!

As we write this, the Summer Solstice just occurred. In mid-Winter, it sometimes seems like this day will never get here; but it always does! Now it's hard to believe the days will start getting shorter when the warm weather is just getting started!

Summer brings us once again to the anniversary of the opening of Mirador on July 22. We are celebrating our 8th year in business and we want to say thank you to all of our customers and supporters. We feel privileged to serve you and to experience the pleasure of loving what we do. You make it possible!

Especially for Summer!
There are some products at Mirador that are geared particularly to summer and here are just a few.

Outdoor clothes lines - we have a variety of options for air drying your wash. What a great way to save energy, get outdoors a bit and impart to your cloth goods that great fresh air smell. It is hard to believe but true, in some areas of the country, outdoor drying is illegal! (http://www.treehugger.com/files/2006/10/do_clothes_line.php).

Pack "N" Go Hammocks – great for the backyard or camping. Weighs less than 2 lbs yet holds up to a 200 lb person. You supply the trees! We also have a lot of great books on hiking and biking in the Pacific Northwest.

Wind Chimes, garden gloves and hats, bird feeders, and Zen Garden Gnomes by Steve Herrington. In the kitchen department, all the great tools for food preservation. If you've been wanting to make some jam and preserve it, this could be the summer you do it. Investing in just a few items sets you up for years of "putting food by".

However you spend your time for the next few months, enjoy it to the hilt!

New Books
Lael is no longer working at Mirador (see Employee News, below). Jenny has taken over books and hopefully will be reporting on new books for the next issue.

China vs Made in the USA
Many people are concerned about goods made in China, mostly due to stories of poor labor conditions. We understand and share those concerns.

Unfortunately, we Americans have dug ourselves into a hole on this issue. Many years of demanding cheap consumer goods has pushed much manufacturing to third world countries. It
is very difficult to find stainless steel kitchenware not made in China. Most manufacturers, even those who would have preferred not to, have had to move their manufacturing to China or go out of business. We ourselves have had high-quality French-made stainless steel cookware that people refused to pay for, instead buying the Chinese-made cookware. We finally sold it at a loss.

That's why it's disheartening to overhear people saying "I can't buy that because it's made in China". Are you willing to pay more for items not made in China? After all, that's why companies moved manufacturing there to begin with – to entice people to buy their (cheaper) Chinese-made products rather than their competitor's non-Chinese-made products.

We have been making more of effort to replace Chinese-made products with American- or other non-Chinese-made products when it makes sense. We are also trying to identify these products in the store with tags and labels. Look for more products like this in the future (including some Portland-made kitchen gadgets). You are also most welcome to let us know about non-Chinese made kitchenware if you are aware of it.

Stainless Steel Prices
Stainless steel prices are rising rapidly, much faster than other prices. Supposedly this is due to nickel prices rising. Although predicted to gradually decrease "sometime", stainless steel products are continuing to rapidly increase in price. This is particularly noticeable in cookware, as there is so much stainless steel in those pieces.

Our stockpot supplier, Progressive International, is discontinuing their stockpots and multi-cookers due to price increases. We still have some in stock so I would suggest if you are interested in these items to buy now because the next batch (from a different supplier) is going to be much more expensive.

Employee News
Lael left Mirador in April for the last month of her pregnancy. Seamus Easton Asquith was born slightly earlier than scheduled, in the last week of April (luckily when his dad, Ted, was off from school for a week).

Honna Veerkamp and Alicia Carrol have been working at Mirador for close to two months. Honna comes to use from People's Food Co-op and Alicia from Trader Joe's, so have great experience for us. Honna just returned from an internship in Costa Rica (she is studying Journalism at PSU). Alicia just got accepted by the Rose City Rollers roller derby league and will be playing with a team in a few months. They, along with Jenny, are taking on more of tasks of running Mirador beyond pricing and putting out products. That is giving us more time to work on our badly neglected garden and house. We sure appreciate it!

Tip of the Month – Better Leftover Pizza (and more)
Many years ago, BMW (Before MicroWaves), my parents gave me a toaster oven. When Lynn and I got a microwave fifteen or so years ago, we stopped using the toaster oven.

Recently at Mirador we went microwave-free (Jenny couldn't have a hot lunch because she wouldn't use it) and substituted a toaster oven. We also did this at home (although we still use the microwave for re-warming tea and a very few other tasks). Since we
sell two toaster ovens – one with and one without convection, this gave us a chance to use them.

We need to plan a little bit more when heating lunches, but we quickly got used to it; it doesn't really take that long and the food actually comes out tasting a lot better. We also use ours at home for many baking jobs – it uses a lot less electricity because you are not heating a lot of oven space that you don't need.  Our home toaster oven is also a convection oven, which saves some time, too.

Leftover pizza heated in a microwave oven bears little resemblance to the original (microwave ovens make bread leathery). But in the toaster over it tastes almost as good as just-delivered. It's worth switching over just for that

Independents Day
We are joining many other businesses in a "Local First" promotion sponsored by the Sustainable Business Network of Portland. Called "Celebrate Our Independents", the idea is to further entice folks into shopping local, thereby keeping dollars circulating in our community. There will be some free movie nights at The Baghdad July 2 & 3 and discount offers at many businesses, including Mirador. For more details, visit the Sustainable Business Network of Portland.

The 2007 Division/Clinton Street Fair
The Balloon GuyMark July 28th on your calendars for the 15th Annual Division/Clinton Street Fair. Mirador will once again be hosting zany Balloon Guy Joe Mishkin. Kids (and adults!) love him. Joe will be performing from Noon until 2:00 PM.

"His energy, commitment and sheer human radiance are unequaled." - Mike McMenamin

We will also have a table with lots of sale items in our parking lot. Come join the fun!

Mural Update - Clear Channel Loses for Once!!!
Many of you know that we became enmeshed in the tangle of City Code & politics, a Clear Channel lawsuit and freedom of expression when a mural was painted on Mirador's garage doors in 2002. The latest chapter in the story (and there have been many chapters) is that Clear Channel took the City of Portland to court over the issue once again in 2006.  In the recent ruling, Judge Michael Marcus declared that the city of Portland may actually prefer art over commercial speech, basically overturning a 1999 ruling. The way forward is a bit unclear; artists and politicos are gathering to decide how to proceed. We have been told that our mural, 2/3 covered up by plywood to comply with the sign code, may be a litmus test for this recent ruling; that a sure sign that we have regained artistic expression in Portland will be 100% of our mural in view.  We are waiting for further word on this. Meanwhile, see this Portland Mercury article for an expanded version of the mural story.
