As I write, Fall has made an abrupt appearance. I'm sure there's plenty of Indian Summer weather ahead (this coming weekend is supposed to be nice), but as the rains come, the temperatures cool and the evenings get dark earlier, my thoughts turn to enjoying being inside reading again, putting the gardens to bed, and cooking more elaborate meals and other food interests (I made my first sauerkraut and sour pickles recently and am anxiously awaiting their fermentation). Mirador is well equipped to help you with your food and cooking needs, be it appliances, accessories, gadgets or advice (always feel free to ask us for help).

Also, see our last newsletter for Back to School Supplies that might still come in handy this school year (hint: The Laptop Lunch sets have been wildly popular!).

Leaf Plates
We have imported a good amount of leaf plates from India, designed for easy use and ecological throw-away. They're made from leaves of deciduous tropical trees, hygienically cleaned and then woven together with natural fibers into bowls and plates. They are perfect for weddings and other family gatherings, festivals and camping. After you have used for a meal, they simply go into the compost bin or can be buried in the ground while camping.

Botanika Leafware Pricing:
25 small bowls   $12.50   or  .60 each
25 small plates   $13.75    or   .65 each
25 large plates   $16.25    or  .75 each

These are off the shelf prices; for higher quantities we will offer lower prices. Please get in touch for a quote at 503-231-5175 or lynn@miradorcommunitystore.com. If you have a wedding or big event coming up next summer, think about purchasing now as the supplies will not last. Come by and check them out; besides the earth-friendly advantage, they are quite beautiful to look at.

We have an overstock of one ounce tincture bottles with droppers. We will sell 25 or more (we have over 100 to sell) at 75 cents each on a first come basis. Just give a call to the store if you're interested: 503-231-5175

Murals Get Their Day in Court (and so does Lynn)
If you agree that public murals enhance our neighborhoods, now is the time to take a stand!  After the 1998 Clear Channel Outdoor v City of Portland lawsuit, murals effectively became "illegal" in Portland.

Join Portland Mural Defense in advocating for murals and the important role they play in building community and beautifying our public spaces.  This fall, the Regional Arts and Culture Council's Public Art Murals Program (devised as a compromise in 2004 to allow murals), will face a serious constitutional challenge.

The 1998 lawsuit was re-opened in August 2005 by Clear Channel Outdoor.   At the company's request a trial was scheduled for October 2 - 12, 2006 in Multnomah County Court.  This time, however, artists and art advocates will be in the courtroom to personally defend art and murals.  Lynn will be testifying at the request of Joe Cotter, a muralist who applied and was accepted for standing in the case. We encourage you to attend!

Portland Mural Defense is planning educational events and public outreach to build and strengthen support for murals in Portland.
